The term “process addiction” refers to the strong impulse to engage in a specific behaviour, despite any detrimental consequences to one’s wellbeing that might be attached to this behaviour.
An example of process addiction is gambling or co-dependence. It is important to note that while process addiction can occur without drug or alcohol abuse, it still provides a person with an emotional high. Like alcohol or drug abuse, people with process addiction struggle to control themselves and cannot stop from engaging in a particular behaviour.
Process addiction can be subtle but recognising that this addiction exists is the first step in the journey to break free from this dependence.
